Concordia University Ann Arbor recommends the following tips to better assist your educational goals in higher education:

College tips

  • Verify your status for veterans priority registration with the Veterans Certifying Official and register for your classes on the assigned date
  • Pay close attention to the semester deadlines for add, drop, refund and withdrawals
  • Ensure your contact information is always updated with Concordia and the Veterans Outreach Coordinator
  • Meet with the Veteran Certifying Official or program advisor counselor prior to the start of the semester, and ensure your classes are applicable to your program
  • Develop a working relationship with an academic advisor
  • Speak to your instructors about classroom concerns
  • Contact VA regional office in Buffalo, NY if you have any personnel updates
  • Provide copies of your training schedule and orders to your professors and the department of veteran services every semester

Department of Veteran Affairs tips

  • Know the minimum number of credits required to receive education benefits and recall you’ll only receive VA educational benefits while enrolled in classes (no break pay)
  • You will be paid after the completion of the month
  • Students are responsible for all issued overpayments
  • Check with veterans services at Concordia for any important updates

Finance and personal tips

  • Inquire and apply for financial aid and scholarships
  • Prepare a résumé, brush up on interviewing skills, attend job fairs, and make sure to utilize campus resources
  • Textbooks and supplies are the student’s responsibility; not all benefits available cover these expenses
  • Advocate for yourself. Remember, there’s a Student Veteran Specialist to advocate for you, but you need to address issues early on
  • Network with other veterans, and exchange experiences and information (phone, email, etc.) on how VA can help with your needs
